On September 30th, Beard will share his love of creativity with a group of young Central City students at the Mahalia Jackson Family and Community Center in New Orleans.  Together, Beard and the students, as well as special guests from the New Orleans Saints, will paint a 10 x 20 foot mural featuring his signature style of whimsical animals at play. Beard will remain in New Orleans the rest of the week to participate in several other artistic endeavors. During the first week of October as well, Beard will donate and dedicate his painting, Shark Tank, to the Audubon Institute’s Aquarium of the Americas. The painting was created in Beard’s New Orleans studio before Hurricane Katrina, featuring all the inhabitants of the pre-storm shark tank. The piece will be prominently featured next to the exhibit where Beard was inspired to paint it.

  • Alex Beard Debuts Unique Line Of Jigsaw Puzzles
    2008-08-25

PRESS RELEASE: Puzzles Can Be Rearranged Into New Shapes and Images
New York City – (August 25, 2008) --  Jigsaw puzzles are all the same, right?  Hundreds of abstract, interlocking pieces fit together to produce a scene from nature or an image of napping kittens.  Some puzzles have evolved to 3D versions and computer adaptations, but the end goal remains the same: to recreate the picture on the front of the box.  Artist Alex Beard has long wondered why that is the expected standard.  Why can a puzzle only make one picture?  In his line of work, the goal is creativity, curiosity and novelty.  Couldn’t puzzles be innovative as well?  With the introduction of Alex Beard Impossible Puzzles, Beard proves that by looking at the jigsaw puzzle with a new perspective, anything is possible.

By Robin Durand: “I went to Tulane [University] for a year in 1989 and '90. And then left and went traveling. I wasn't crazy about Tulane. I liked New Orleans perfectly well, but I didn't really want to be in school. So, I kind of figured that being at Tulane and living in New Orleans were, actually, two different things. So, then I came back in 1994. I came back because I was painting in the West Indies, in Basil's Bar, Mustique.”
